High Elevation Day Trip to Cloudcroft

Meet us at a central pickup spot in El Paso, and we’ll head out at 7:15am on a scenic drive through the mountains to Alamagordo, New Mexico. Our first stop will be for a quick breakfast, and then we head directly to the New Mexico Museum of Space History. Then, we’ll head to Pistachioland and Heart of the Desert Winery for a wine tasting. We’ll continue up the mountain into the Lincoln National Forest and stop for a photo opportunity at the Mexican Canyon Trestle overlook before heading into the charming mountain village. You’ll have free time to explore Burro Avenue’s shops, grab lunch at one of the local cafés or famous BBQ spots, and enjoy optinal self guided hike at the Osha Trail (2.5 mile loop) or follow your tour guide down the canyon on the Tunnel Vista Trail for a a dip in the waterfall. (2 mile loop) Depending on the season, you can also visit the Sunspot Solar Observatory or visit local events and festivals being hosted. After a refreshing day in the pines, we’ll load up and return to El Paso with a quick restroom and dinner stop along the way. At nearly 8,700 ft elevation, Cloudcroft is a forested alpine escape offering cooler temperatures, rustic charm, and artistic local flavor. It’s an ideal blend of history, outdoor adventure, and small‑town culture. This trip is ideal for working professionals, students and families who want enjoy the outdoors and hiking. We recommend bear spray as a precaution if you are planning hiking at Lincoln National Forest. Check the website for information about bear safety. We have rental bear spray for $5 that must be returned at the end of the day. Waiver must be signed for bear spray rental.

General Tips for Your Day Trips to Cloudcroft

  • Dress in layers: Weather can change quickly—mornings and evenings are cooler, while midday can be warm, especially in the desert.

  • Wear comfortable walking shoes: You’ll be exploring outdoor sites, trails, and town streets. Sandals, flip-flops or water shoes are recommended for the waterfall hike.

  • Tunnel Vista Trail Waterfall hike: An extra set of clothes in case you decide you want to take a dip in the waterfall and swimming hole.

  • Stay hydrated: Bring a refillable water bottle and drink plenty of water throughout your trip.

  • Protect yourself from the sun: Use sunscreen, wear a hat and sunglasses, and seek shade when possible. Bug spray is recommended.

  • Bring snacks: Some stops may have limited food options or shorter business hours, so having snacks on hand is helpful.

  • Charge your devices and bring a power bank: Cell service may be spotty in remote areas, and you’ll want your phone ready for photos and navigation.

  • Download maps or directions ahead of time: This is useful especially for locations with limited or no cell service. AllTrails is useful for downloading offline maps.

  • Carry cash and cards: Some local shops and restaurants may only accept one or the other.

  • Use restrooms during scheduled stops: Facilities can be limited, especially at outdoor locations like the Lincoln National Forest.

  • Be respectful of nature and art installations: Follow all park rules, pack out trash, and avoid climbing on protected sites.

  • Prepare for altitude in Cloudcroft: The town is at nearly 9,000 feet, so take it easy if you feel short of breath or dizzy.

  • Check business hours: Galleries, eateries, and shops in Cloudcroft may have seasonal or limited hours. Plan accordingly.

  • Bring optional items: A camera, binoculars, a small daypack, and a light jacket or rain poncho can enhance your comfort and experience.
